Report Essay: Six Careers Within the Fashion Industry | Writing and Research in the Disciplines

Assigned during my Writing and Research in the Disciplines class, the purpose of this essay was to create a well-researched informative writing about an aspect of my desired career field. With a perpetual love for design, I purposefully decided to pursue a personally-unexplored area within this concept: fashion design. My essay, Six Careers Within the Fashion Industry, gives the reader an organized and well-constructed look at six of the most common jobs in the fashion industry. The writing consists of eight paragraphs: an introduction, a paragraph for each career description, and a well-rounded conclusion.

My first goal was to go above bare minimum research; ethically working to broaden my understanding of these concepts within the field of design. Without personal understanding, how could I organize a message, much less relay information to my readers? I spent a couple weeks immersing myself into the world of fashion design by watching videos, studying peer-reviewed journals, and asking myself what the selective information meant as a whole. I consulted about fifteen sources before drafting my paper, which came with extensive reflection and critical thinking on how to put this newly-acquired knowledge into my own words. After a few days of review and contemplation, I submitted my polished result. Confident that my writing reflected a deepened knowledge regarding top careers in the fashion world, I knew that I’d achieved my initial goal.

My second focus was on ensuring that each paragraph contributed a sense of cohesiveness to the rest of the writing. I made it a point to disseminate my information in an organized manner, while also maintaining a sense of connection. When describing the six careers, I made sure to occasionally mention their relation to each other and how the roles collaborate within the fashion industry. Keeping this connection throughout the entirety of my essay enabled me to unify the message and become satisfied with my achieved cohesiveness.

Meaningful research and reflection were the basis of this essay. I really enjoyed its creation process because I was able to share the results of my research in my own words, forcing myself to dig deeper when it came to discipline-related exploration. Not only this, but I was able to organize my thoughts into a cohesive and unified text, conveying a purely informational message about six primary careers within the fashion industry.
